Gun Dog Training
Gun dogs have special skills in their genes. I advise on how these can be developed at an early age through play, patience and continuity.
I offer training from a puppy right through to a fully grown adult dog. Any dog with a will to retrieve can receive this training.
Of course teaching you to be a confident, compassionate, patient handler is key.
Enrichment Retrieving
I also offer enrichment retrieving for people who have taught their dogs the basics and would like their dog to have some enrichment and focus. This training creates a special relationship with your dog.
Many breeds love to retrieve and the training is so enjoyable and fulfilling for both dog and owner once they start they are hooked!
So rather than just chasing a ball out on a walk, the dog learns to use their brain and follow intricate commands and trust their owners completely.
Gun Dog Training from 8 weeks
Gun dog training starts with targeted advice from me at 8 weeks old at home.
The relationship is to be a very special one, built on trust. This time is used to really bond with your gun dog.
I can advise how gun dog skills can be developed at a very early age through play, patience and continuity.
Gun Dog Training from 14 weeks
At 14 weeks training can begin at my training ground.
The basics have to be exceptional if you are to succeed in the future.
All training must be done gradually so as not to over faze your pup.
For example you will be amazed what can be achieved at feed time. Patience, steadiness and direction can be taught during feed time, all without putting pressure on your pup. I can teach you the way to achieve this.
Stages to Gun Dog Training
There are many stages along the way, these start with:
- brilliant basics,
- steadiness,
- channelled eagerness
- confident retrieving,
- heel work,
- stay,
- direction,
- stop,
- hunt whistle,
- memory and blind retrieves,
- distraction.
If your dog is set to be a working dog we also get them used to the noise of the starter pistol and dummy launching to get used to a dummy being fired at distance.
Tailored Gun Dog Training
Each lesson is tailored to you and your dog. What we cover will depend on your individual dog and how quickly they learn and succeed.
When your dog is ready for some competition and distraction, then lessons can be carried out with my gun dogs in a group environment.
How it works
We’ll have an indepth initial call to ensure that I am right for you.
During your lesson we will identify what we need to focus on first.
We will make a plan based on you and your dog’s needs and your specific training requirements.
Following your lesson, I ask you to put your training into practice for 3-4 weeks. This embeds the training that we covered before returning for your next lesson.
If practice has gone well, we will then be ready to build upon your knowledge and advance at your next lesson.
I offer support during practice weeks if you need advice.
After each lesson I email you an individual plan to help you to remember all details that we covered during the lesson. The plan also includes directions on how to achieve the different points.
We also video certain techniques to help you get it right at home. I find this helps owners to relax in the lesson and focus on the here and now.
Ongoing Support
When you and your dog are ready for the shooting field, if you would be happier with some support this can also be arranged at the shoot you will be attending in the future.
